Up Close & Personal: Friday Night Lights Star Stacey Oristano

Working with Emmy-nominated actors on a hit, prime-time TV show is just another day at the office for Stacey Oristano, who plays Mindy Collette on NBC’s hit Friday Night Lights. Starring in a TV show where the entire town revolves around football isn’t a huge feat for Oristano, who grew up in Arlington, Texas where football really was a tremendous part of her life. Brilliant went behind the scenes and caught up with her recently - and during our conversation, Oristano had a lot to say about the show, her new home of Los Angeles, and her career.

Danielle: How did you get started in acting?
Stacey Oristano: “When I was really young and my dad was an actor…I knew from about five years old that I wanted to be a part of that, and I’ve done it ever since.”

D: What’s your role like on the show?
SO: “I started off being Tyra’s older sister, then Tyra left and graduated, and I got married to Billy. [Since then,] most of my stuff on the show has been with [the Riggins].

D: Do you relate to your character, Mindy Collette?
SO: “I relate to her in some ways, but I love that we’re so different. She’s loud and crazy, and I love that and I love getting to tap into that – I wish that I could do that.”

D: What’s it like to come back to your home state to act for the show?
SO: “I look so forward to going back, but it’s a lot of traveling. Austin is a city that I love – it feels like I’m coming home every time I go to work.”

D: How different to you is Los Angeles from Texas?
SO: “Not as different as you would think. I’ve always been a big town girl, but it’s laid back from what I thought it would be. I could walk to get coffee in pajamas and a tank top.”

D: What’s it like to work with your co-stars, Connie [Britton] and Kyle [Chandler], especially since they’ve both been nominated for Emmys?
SO: “I texted them as soon as I got home, we all knew [they got nominated] – it’s about time. They’re both so humbled. Kyle is directing right now, and he had coffee and pizza for the whole crew.”

D: How does it feel to be on an Emmy-nominated show?

SO: “The only thing I can hope is that we get a bigger fan base, [since] we’re still going on season five as the last one.”

D: What’s your favorite role this far?
SO: “I did a lot of stuff, theater wise, and the experiences have been life changing. It’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me. I did a ton of regional theater, Broadway, and Cabaret – I worked non-stop.”

D: What are your dream roles and actors to work with in the future?
SO: “I have a group of friends out here in LA and if I could work with them, then I would be so happy. We’re really trying to make stuff happen on our own.”

Stay tuned for Part II of our interview with Stacey Oristano, coming soon!

Take Action: Men’s Fall Style Forecast

July 23rd, 2010

By Danielle Kaplan

When the warm weather subsides, it’s back to work, literally, for men’s style this fall. We checked with our retail pals and partners to see what they were predicting and to them, this season is all about uniform, rustic rebirth and night watch. These three themes were seen throughout all the runway shows, too. From varsity sweaters to military pea coats, to Gothic influence and to the rustic outdoors, plus a dash of Mad Men, and every guy is covered in the cool trends of the season.

Here are some must-haves of the season we love:

It’s A Family Affair

By Lance Avery Morgan

The Cast of The Kids Are Alright

The Cast of The Kids Are Alright

It might just become one of your favorite films of the year. Surely the Motion Picture Academy will think that when they hand out Oscar nominations this next time around. It’s the most talked-about movie around the brainy set, those who aren’t doing the summer blockbusters, as it was the talk of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and it also won the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival. It’s Focus Features’ The Kids Are Alright, deftly directed by Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon) from an original screenplay that she wrote with her pal Stuart Blumberg (Keeping the Faith). The film has as many twists and turns as a movie can possibly have without seeming gimmicky… and all the while focused on a family for the 2010’s. combines comedic surprise with poignant emotional truth in a funny, vibrant, and richly drawn portrait of a modern family.

In this modern fable, Nic and Jules (three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). Nic and Jules – the “Moms” – gave birth to and raised their children, and built a relatively normal family life for the four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser presses her for a big favor; he wants Joni, now 18, to help him find their biological father because the two teenagers were conceived by artificial insemination.

Annette Bening and Julianne Moore

Annette Bening and Julianne Moore

That’s when the action really kicks in. Against her better judgment, Joni honors her brother’s request and manages to make contact with “bio-dad” Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an easygoing restaurateur and organic garden owner. The kids find themselves drawn to their carefree bachelor dad’s footloose style – especially in contrast to Benning’s Nic, a doctor who has long established their house rules. Moore’s Jules, who has been looking to start a new career in landscaping, also strikes up a rapport with Paul that takes them down a new path as Paul comes into the lives of the family of four, an unexpected new chapter begins for them as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined again. It’s released soon to select markets, so run, don’t walk to see one of the best films of the year.

The Opus of Purpose

The Bigger Picture with Kimberlie Dykeman

Kimberlie Dykeman

Kimberlie Dykeman

“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
~ Maya Angelou

With great anticipation, yet transient restraint, I have listened and honored the lingering under-conversation in my pea-pod brain. And the results rouse a recurring mission to depict and entertain with humor; to prompt and effect with depth and sentiment. Yet, the deliberate transmission of its text is not the music, my friends. Instead, the jazz and groove eclipse the rind and resonates an essence that invigorates me. Effectively, the words write me.
And so I must ask, where lies equal enjoyment in your existence? What fills your belly with glee and moves your lips to hum your very own anthem? Does your spirit-soaked, sense of purpose take shape in the flesh? Have you clipped it to your lapel, a beaming brass broach for the curious world to see and admire? If so, then keep that baby shining! However, if your jewel be hidden, perhaps you’ll reconsider the consequences of hindsight.

k-dykeman-music-note-71510

I say, become an ambassador to your own song, folks. Dispense of the knee-jerk deflection of feelings and release your music and instead, course osmotically through the labyrinth of the tangible and take to galumphing outside the proverbial box of society’s expectations. Dig up a sidelined story, tap your historical humble beginnings, or soapbox with your own fellowship of family, friends, and colleagues. Move to be moved. Name that tune in 50,000 notes and then some. Confetti deaf ears with the tones of who you are, of who you will be, of who you will to be. And, for God’s sake, dance, dance, dance.

Music Industry Seeks Success: 10 Tips

July 7th, 2010

By Danielle Kaplan

[Editor’s Note: We ran a post on singer Jackie Leigh's iTunes success that was so well received that we wanted to follow it up with more helpful info on the entertainment biz. -- Lance Avery Morgan]

Getting into the music industry is tough work, but take it from Lawrence Schwartz, manager of new singing sensation Jackie Leigh, who has advice to anyone out there trying to launch his or her singing career…it takes much effort and a little luck.

Jackie Leigh and Fastball's Miles Zuniga recently performing at the Belmont in Dallas

Jackie Leigh and Fastball's Miles Zuniga recently performing at the Belmont in Dallas

With experience on launching a Internet sensation, Schwartz weighs in that launching something over the Internet is the same as not launching over the Internet. He says you have to develop the product (songs) or band, test, price, refine, test, market/PR, refine, market/PR, new product (songs), and then the cycle keeps going.

Schwartz’s advice to anyone looking to get in the music industry? Here are the top 10 pieces from a business perspective.

Lawrence Schwartz

Lawrence Schwartz

1. Know whom you are trying to reach. Kids? Women? Country fans? Metal fans? Your music and your image has to speak exactly to the fans you want to reach.
2. Test your songs or videos over the Internet.
3. Have a professional website as your calling card. Not a MySpace, but your own website.
4. Shake hands, be nice, and look people in the eyes when making personal appearances. You want these people to be buying your music some day.
5. Write or sing from your soul – make sure your music is you…authentic and real. At the most basic level, this is what people relate to most.
6. Work with someone who is committed to you; a business manager, a family member, a relative – someone with business experience and who has your best interest at heart.
7. It’s not just about the music. Put in the hours to really learn and know the music business. It’s all online, so it’s easy to access.
8. Never try to advance your music career with someone that can say no, but can’t say yes. If you call a station to play your music, call the program director or the GM of the station – they can say no and yes, but a DJ can only say no. Go to the top.
9. Network. Get to know as many people as possible, and people who can help you – photographers, musicians, public relations people, station managers, etc. You’ll find a way to help them in return.
10. Read all you can about the music industry. Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vibe, Spin, Blender, Paste. Success leaves clues, and so do failures – it’s all in print.

jackie_leigh

Take this advice and run with it – who knows, maybe you, too, will be the next big thing. For more information on Jackie Leigh or to hear her songs, visit www.jackieleigh.com. and on iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/jackie-leigh/id326944774

Revealed: Secrets to Love & The Science of Healing

July 6th, 2010

It’s the eternal quest: love and wellness. Now, you can be get closer to both with today’s DVD debut of Secrets to Love and The Science of Healing with Dr. Esther Sternberg from PBS Home Video.

Print

In Secrets to Love, viewers will master the tools necessary for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, techniques which may even bring the most distressed marriages back to a state of love. In The Science of Healing with Dr. Esther Sternberg, ancient meditative and relaxation techniques designed to create equilibrium between the mind and body is profiled.

Secrets to Love
For viewers wondering what happened to that “Leave it to Beaver” fantasy, where a perfect family is a reality, Secrets to Love may have the answers. For many couples, the fantasy dissolves away and people stuck asking themselves “how can we have a relationship that is healthy and happy like we envisioned?” Director Tracie Donahue searches for the answers to finding (and maintaining) a healthy, happy love, by asking real couples and relationship experts the most important questions. What draws us to people? Do certain communication patterns contribute to the breakdown of relationships? How do skills such as empathy contribute to a healthy, functioning relationship – and can they be taught?

It all starts at home – but if applied globally, think where it could lead?! This is a film about how real couples learned to create the marriage they hoped for. Dr. Francesca Adler-Baeder of Auburn University believes “ [The film]engages the audience with these seemingly ‘perfect’ couples, who we then find out have endured very real and very difficult circumstances, and who have enhanced and strengthened their relationship through these experiences. These are beautiful portrayals of what healthy marriages look and sound like over time.”

The Science of Healing with
The Science of Healing with Dr. Esther Sternberg introduces viewers to the way the brain helps the body heal, both physically and emotionally. Science is beginning to understand the brain¹s function in healing, a role the ancient Greeks understood and practiced.

Physician and noted medical researcher Esther Sternberg leads viewers on a journey of discovery through her own personal story of illness and healing as she explores what leading scientists are learning about the mind/body connection. The senses, environment, diet, exercise, meditation and even music impact the body’s ability to heal. Dr. Sternberg’s eye-opening tour of the human body leaves viewers stunned at the amazing abilities inherent in all people.
