She may have won our attention as Michael Cera’s onscreen love interest in the hilarious summer blockbuster Superbad, but Canada native Martha MacIsaac is no stranger to the bright lights. At the age of 11, she landed the staring role as orphan Emily Starr in the Canadian television series Emily of New Moon. Now at 23-year-sold, Martha MacIsaac has made the transition from Canada to LA quite smoothly despite having to learn how to drive on LA highways. In an exclusive interview with Brilliant, MacIsaac dishes on her upcoming projects, Michael Cera, her dream of appearing on 30 Rock, and why she still has to sleep with the lights on occasionally.

Kaitlyn Moise: Superbad was full of so many comedians. What was one of the funniest things that happened on set?
Martha MacIsaac: The scene that made me laugh the most was the bedroom scene with Michael [where we awkwardly try to have drunken sex]. I was just mortified. We shot it last so, everybody was like, “Oh, it’s going to be so funny, I can’t wait! We are all coming to set to watch.” So, once I got over my nerves it was actually kind of fun by the end of the day.

Who is funnier, Michael Cera or Jonah Hill?
I can’t pick one or the other! They both are genius. I think they’re genius together. They just have very different styles of comedy. Jonah is more in your face funny and Michael is just awkwardly funny. They both make me laugh more than most people.

What are some of your upcoming projects?
I’ve got two movies coming out. One is called The Thaw with Val Kilmer and it’s an eco-thriller. Val Kilmer plays a global warming scientist and I’m his estranged daughter. He makes a discovery in the Arctic that poses a threat to the world that hasn’t been a problem since the Ice Age, but now with global warming it is going to become a problem again.

What is your favorite horror film of all time?
Some of them make me so nervous because I get so wrapped up in them instantly and then I’ll have to sleep with my lights on for days at a time. I’m a huge chicken. I hadn’t seen a horror film in a long time and I recently saw Last House on the Left. I was in it and I still got scared.

If you could work with any actor or actress who would it be?
When I think of an actress I want to work with, I think of women I can learn a lot from and who I admire. I would love to learn from Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, and Kate Winslet. Right now I think I’d like to try something funny with a comedic female partner. I want to be on 30 Rock. Oh man. It’s brilliant and so funny.

What’s your favorite current fashion trend?

I just bought a pair of over-the-knee boots that I am in love with. They’re by Dolce Vita. That’s my new obsession, but I’m also trying to find more eco-friendly brands and being responsible when it comes to shopping for clothes.

What was the last movie you saw that made you cry?
Oh, I cry at everything. The Reader was amazing.

If you had a dinner party and could invite three people, living or dead, who would they be?
I would want to invite a really great cook. So, maybe I would have Jamie Oliver to cook a nice vegetarian meal and teach me as he cooked. I would like my grandpa to be there so I could talk to him and find out more about him. I would have Obama there just because I want to meet him and I would want someone for entertainment, so probably Bob Dylan would be interesting.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure snack food?
It’s vegan coconut milk ice cream—the most delicious ice cream of all time.

Where would we find you on a typical Friday night?
Probably at home. I’m like a 60-year-old lady with a 23-year-old’s life. I like to make crafts and cook, and do nerdy stuff like that.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully, I’m still acting and doing what I love, and I’ll have traveled a lot more and be somewhere content and happy.
